Test Drive: Denza D9 – A Key Player Reshaping the High-End MPV Market Landscape

In Malaysia’s luxury MPV market, a long-standing, rigid status quo has prevailed: for any budget exceeding RM300,000, the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire have effectively become the “default” choices for consumers. Consequently, the definition of what a luxury MPV should be has remained firmly established for over a decade.

However, in recent years—driven by the maturation of electrification technology and an aggressive push by Chinese brands into the high-end segment—this “default” paradigm has begun to shift. We have seen a wave of premium Chinese MPVs enter the local market, including the Denza D9, Zeekr 009, XPeng X9, and GWM Wey G9.

Among these, the Zeekr 009 and the Denza D9—the subject of our test drive—have emerged as the most popular choices among Malaysian consumers. As the debut offering from Denza, a premium brand under BYD, the D9 carries the significant responsibility of breaking the long-standing Japanese monopoly within this market segment.

As an aside, have you noticed that Chinese manufacturers seem to have reached a tacit agreement to use the number “9” in their model names? This is clearly no coincidence; the number has become a de facto hallmark for a flagship model—an industry consensus where the presence of a “9” effectively signals that the vehicle is the top-tier MPV within a brand’s lineup.

From a marketing perspective, this approach is highly efficient. It eliminates the need for complex explanations regarding nomenclature and establishes a clear psychological anchor when compared to competitors, allowing consumers to intuitively grasp that “9” equates to a “top-tier MPV” without requiring in-depth research. In other words, this isn’t a matter of cultural preference, but rather the result of a highly commercialized standardization of brand language.

Returning to the main topic: the Denza D9 officially launched in our market last February. This all-electric, luxury seven-seater MPV is available locally in two trim levels—Advanced and Premium. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, which is available in the Chinese market, has not been introduced here. The distinction between the Advanced and Premium trims lies in their drivetrains: the former features a single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup, while the latter utilizes a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration.

In terms of pricing, the entry-level, single-motor front-wheel-drive Denza D9 Advanced is priced at RM299,000 in Malaysia, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Denza D9 Premium is priced at RM355,000. Each new vehicle comes with a 6-year/150,000 km comprehensive vehicle warranty; the “Blade Battery” is covered by an 8-year/160,000 km warranty, and the electric motors are backed by an 8-year/150,000 km warranty.

The Denza D9 measures 5,250 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,110 mm—making it both longer and wider than the well-known Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. I first encountered the vehicle during a work-related visit to BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, in 2023; to be honest, my initial reaction upon seeing the D9 was a sense of disdain, as it looked too much like an “Alphard.”

At the time, the D9 had already become a rising star in China’s luxury new-energy MPV market. Although the brand offered only this single model, it consistently achieved monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units, securing the top spot in the luxury new-energy MPV segment priced above 300,000 RMB (approximately RM193,000)—a testament to its immense momentum.

As for the exterior, we won’t dwell on it too much; it certainly bears a strong resemblance to the Toyota Alphard, though the front fascia features a vertical-slat grille rather than a matrix-style design. Regardless, it possesses the commanding presence expected of a large luxury MPV—its increased length and width ensure it stands out, whether parked in front of a hotel or in a shopping mall parking lot.

Like all business-oriented MPVs—often referred to as “nanny vans”—the interior layout is arguably more impressive than the exterior. Stepping inside, you’ll find what the manufacturer calls the “π-motion” wraparound cockpit. It features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen (which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). The system also includes comprehensive voice recognition, connected vehicle services, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Naturally, a sense of luxury is essential; from the layout of the center console to the choice of materials, it is clear that Denza aims to establish a high-end brand image. The extensive use of soft-touch materials, wood-grain trim, and metallic accents gives the interior a level of refinement befitting a premium brand.

The driver’s seat is positioned relatively high, offering excellent forward visibility—a design choice that helps reduce driving stress, which is particularly beneficial for a large MPV. The steering wheel is well-sized and provides a solid, substantial grip. The instrument cluster and the large central touchscreen feature a display style that is quintessentially “BYD”; the operating logic is straightforward and easy to master.

It is worth noting that, despite the Denza D9’s extensive array of high-tech features, the interface does not rely exclusively on the touchscreen. Frequently used functions retain more accessible, physical-style controls—a crucial detail for daily driving that helps minimize driver distraction. That said, it is a slight drawback that climate control adjustments must still be managed via the central touchscreen.

For a luxury MPV, the experience of second-row passengers is arguably even more important than the vehicle’s driving dynamics. Denza D9 has clearly invested heavily in this area, equipping the vehicle with independent “captain’s chairs” upholstered in premium Nappa leather. These seats come standard with power-adjustable headrests and leg rests, as well as a massage function. Furthermore, each seat features a dedicated touchscreen integrated into its armrest, allowing passengers to conveniently adjust their seating position, climate control settings, and multimedia systems.

Furthermore, the sides of the seats are equipped with dedicated wireless smartphone charging pads and charging ports. Notably, the second-row seats feature an extra-long 1,080mm electric sliding rail, allowing for highly flexible legroom. Additionally, a 170mm-wide aisle between the second-row seats facilitates easy access for passengers heading to the third row. To enhance the interior ambiance, the D9 is also fitted with a 128-color hidden, rhythm-responsive ambient lighting system.

In terms of the actual riding experience, comfort stands out above all else. The seats offer an extensive range of adjustments—including backrest angle and leg rest positioning—ensuring that passengers of all body types can easily find a comfortable posture. This design effectively reduces fatigue during long-distance travel, while the generously sized seats provide excellent support and a sense of being well-cradled. For families, the second-row configuration makes it easy to attend to children, while for business use, it offers the level of comfort and luxury required for hosting distinguished guests.

As for other equipment, all D9 models available locally come standard with electric sliding side doors and an electric tailgate, a panoramic glass sunroof, a color head-up display (HUD), a three-zone automatic climate control system, a 14-speaker Dynaudio sound system, a 50W wireless smartphone charger, a 6.8-liter mini-fridge (capable of cooling down to -6°C), an ion-based air purifier, and a total of six USB charging ports distributed throughout the front and rear. Moreover, the power-adjustable seats include a memory function, as well as heating and ventilation capabilities.

In terms of safety features, the Denza D9 comes standard with a comprehensive Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance suite. This includes functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that operates across the full speed range, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Centering Assist (LCA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)—essentially providing all the essential equipment one would expect.

However, the true measure of a successful luxury MPV lies not just in how opulent it appears while stationary, but in how “stress-free” it feels when navigating real-world road conditions. The dynamic experience of the Denza D9 is clearly engineered with the core objective of “reducing the driver’s burden,” rather than pursuing driving engagement or excitement. This focus becomes immediately apparent the moment you start driving in an urban environment.

Regarding the powertrain, the front-wheel-drive Denza D9 Advanced is equipped with a front-mounted motor that delivers 313 PS and 360 Nm of torque. Despite a vehicle weight of 2,764 kg, it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.5 seconds. While the performance may not be described as explosive, it is more than sufficient to meet the mobility needs of buyers in this segment.
